I'm not excusing spammers but I reckon it would be considerate to declare a change of heart from ArenaNet's end. After all, spamming has been allowed for two years now.

Just because you poked the snake the first few times without incident, doesn't mean it won't come around and bite you the next time.
It's always been against the rules to spam. They don't owe anyone a damn thing it's the players responsibility to read and abide by the ToS. The sudden crack down and harsh punishment are good, for the general population that has to spam sales crap in all chat anyway (read; lazy, egoistic). I tend to agree with the folks saying one week. Three days is really rather light IMO, but Anet's always been conservative. Still... it might make some think twice about spamming all chat with trade stuff.
GG. If we're upping the crackdown on bots, let's clean up a little slime along the way.

I hope they find that banning people is not the solution because the trade system is broke. Just make one town on bath island for trading. Give us the ability to post items we have for sale without having to type them out and provide a way for buyers to search what is being sold. similar to an auction house but both the seller and buyer have to be in this town.

seriously. Why does anet ban people for spamming? they have a program that just doesnt let u talk for a minute if u spam too much. if anet has a problem with people spamming, then make the program respond to less posts. not ban people. there. problem solved, anet.

That, my friend, makes too much sense. Why in the WORLD would anet look to a player for insight? Your idea is done with my friend.

This ban is plain stupid.
Now they remember that spamming trade messages in general chat is a "bannable" offense?

I agree with Woody.
IMHO, the ambiguity of Gaile's statement proves that something is wrong...
My guess is that these bans were either a mistake, or not about the 'spam' at all.

I don't get why he was banned for 72 hours.. i thought 48 hours would be enough a punishment?

Maybe because 72 hours has seemed to make an impression.

Foe, I'm thinking the same way like you do. I seen countless idiots spamming crap or offensive stuffs everywhere in GW yet they don't seen to be banned. (I go back the next night and they're still there going at it). There must be something missing and why A-Net hasn't response back yet about the final resolutions for this kind of banning.

Not that I have a problem with banning folks who spam in all chat, but there's obviously some inconsistencies.... which in reglar engrish means 'no fair'. There really should be a nice fast acting automated mute in all chat, and all chat only. Then.... perhaps 10 times as many spots on the mute list wouldn't be so sorely needed.

Not being able to catch all, and ban all is a normal fact of life, some criminals get caught, others get away with their acts. Is this fair? No if possible we should catch and punish most, but if we are unable too letst just catch a decent number to at least try and limit the nuisance.
You can also just ask yourself, if we can't catch all, would it then be fair to the populous (to whom they owe responsability) to let get away the ones they can catch?
Don't reverse the reasoning and claim it's unfair to punish the ones that get caught for violating the rules, just catch what you can and set an example in agreement with the rules of conduct.

Spam in all chat = Ban for a day (It's a gamers nightmare, imagine being banned for an entire day on the weekend)
Spam in trade = Ban for say 2 hours
The other thing is this, Trade chat has a character limit no? So you cannot fully describe your product there? Not cool IMO!!!
So there are 2 sides to the coin!!!

Patrick, while I agree with you, and I have no problem with action against spammers, the main issue is beyond simple "break the rules - now pay the price". The issue is having a rule in place, that has never been enforced with a ban, then all of a sudden start banning without warning.
Think of it like this. It is against the law (at least in America) to jaywalk. You can technically be given a ticket and fined for it. Well, most cities pretty much ignore this law. Let's say all of a sudden, the mayor of your city tells police to start enforcing it in full - ticket everyone who jaywalks! This is never announced to anyone.
Can they do it? Sure, well within the law. I ask you, how do you think the public would react? Quite upset, I would think. Not sure what would happen, but I guarantee everyone would be upset, no doubt. This is a similar situation, if it is indeed mods playing seek and destroy.

Sure, banning people for spamming is a good way to cut down on it, but it would be nice if there was an alternative to spamming. I personally never spam, I advertise (write a message once every 30 seconds or so, so that people actually SEE it), which is fine, but spamming (5 lines in a row, repeat when spam message is gone) is just as annoying to me as anyone. I think Anet really should give us a GOOD way to trade, so that people will not feel the need to spam. There are days when I know EXACTLY why people do it, as sometimes your message is gone within 1 second of you writing it, and that 5x spam would be a good way to get the message out there, as annoying as it is. I think that there should be a better way to do this.
A simple way to do it, could be a system similar to the Template display box. I have been thinking this over recently, and with tweaking, it could be nice. Basically, there is 1 district, where everyone goes to trade. You set up a 'template' of your item (same box as template code, but instead of skills, the picture of the item, and instead of attributes, the stats), and add it to the NPC. After this is done, people can browse through items the same way you can browse through Templates. You select the name that you want to open, and it brings up the Template window, but with your item/items listed. This way, people can freely look through item lists, and then PM you if they are interested. This would reduce spam to almost none (except for those people who will NEVER learn :P), and would be an easy way to have an 'Auction House' as such.

All I want for Christmas is a little less spam!
I'm sorry you got banned for selling in local chat, but honestly it's your own damn fault. There's a trade channel, try using it.
If Anet is finally cracking down on the annoying wtb/wts spam in local, huzzah! Maybe I'll be able to turn it back on once in a while and have a conversation with people. It get's mighty lonely during the day while all my guildies are at work or school.
For those that feel that selling in local is ok: there's a trade channel for a reason. And no, I don't want to have to go another district to get away from the spammage. I shouldn't have to!
For those that think spamming is the only way to buy or sell something: I have sold all kinds of things and I have never spammed the same thing 3 or 5 (or a dozen) times in a row.

I think the issue is more than "just use the trade channel". People are always trying to find other ways to bring attention to their message, more than others. Local = yellow name/white text, so stands out if there's lots of Trade (red). Once 1 person does it, everyone else does too. If Anet would bring in a better way of doing it, none of this would be an issue...

I will agree with that, and I mentioned before: The trade channel chat is nasty on the eyes. It all sticks together. It's the only channel where the user names are the same (ugly) color as the text, so once in awhile it's easy to get lost in it all.

I was on LA this morning, I wish that peoples would keep their spams in trade channel.. I mean that is what Trade Channel is for! We don't want to see "WTS GODLY Crystalline Sword... no noob offers and no mini pets trade" all over regular chat!!

Hell,I've spammed even after the introduction of the Party Search system.
The reason is perfectly clear as to why as well.A 31 character limit.
How exactly is someone supposed to fit in the stats of say your typical Sundering Chaos Axe of Fortitude?I mean, jesus theres goes 20+ of the 31 limit. Now I have to fit in the stats of the Sundering Mod,the Fortitude Mod,the Inscription, its rarity(Gold/Purple),It's requirement,What I currently want for it,so on,so forth.
I never understood as to why the hell it had a lower character limit than typing in the All Chat/Trade Chat.Oh wait.I know. It's because Anet simply doesn't make sense.
